A member of the Burseraceae plant family, Boswellia carteri is a species of frankincense that is native to Somalia and Somaliland. Boswellia carteri are small trees that tend to grow in more rocky and mountainous regions. The trees are prized for the golden, aromatic oleoresin that seeps from the tree when it is cut or injured. The dried resin helps to protect the injured area of the tree as it heals. Boswellia carteri is not classified as an endangered species by The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources). However, the species Boswellia sacra has been classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN. Both species share similarities, and we believe that it is prudent to carefully source these precious oils from ethical suppliers that are mindful of the conservation of these sacred trees.
