Baking Soda

Baking Soda, also known as Sodium Bicarbonate, is a versatile alkaline ingredient widely used in bath, body and household formulations. When combined with an acid such as Citric Acid and exposed to water, it releases carbon dioxide, creating the effervescent reaction used in bath bombs, fizzy bath salts and similar products.

For artisans and manufacturers, Baking Soda can serve several formulation functions depending on the intended finished product. In bath and body applications, it may be incorporated into bath bomb, bath salt and body powder formulations. It is also used in household products such as carpet fresheners and other dry deodorizing blends.

For those new to formulating effervescent products, Baking Soda is commonly paired with Citric Acid to create fizz. The balance between the alkaline and acidic ingredients, along with the amount of moisture introduced during production, can affect the performance and stability of the finished formulation.

Baking Soda can also contribute mild cleansing and deodorizing properties in suitable formulations. As with any ingredient, the amount used and the overall formulation should be selected according to the intended application and desired finished product characteristics.
